In short

Destriero is a 67.7-metre aluminium motor yacht that Fincantieri built in less than a year at its Muggiano and Riva Trigoso yards in 1991 for one task: to cross the Atlantic faster than any ship before her (Fincantieri, SuperYacht Times). The project grew out of Prince Karim Aga Khan's interest in naval technology; he was then president of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and sponsored the challenge, and Donald Blount designed the hull with styling input from Pininfarina (SuperYacht Times, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda). On 6–9 August 1992, with three gas turbines of about 60,000 hp in total, she ran 3,106 nautical miles from Ambrose Light, New York, to Bishop Rock in 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds at an average of 53.09 knots, without refuelling and 21 hours faster than the previous record holder, the catamaran Hoverspeed (Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, Fincantieri). Fincantieri still called the record unbeaten in 2017, and in 2024 the Italian yachting press reported that the yacht, laid up without her turbines at the Lürssen yard in Bremen, was to be broken up there (Fincantieri, Barche a Motore).

Questions

What is the fastest Atlantic crossing by a ship?
Destriero's: in August 1992 she ran from Ambrose Light, New York, to Bishop Rock in the Scilly Isles in 58 hours, 34 minutes and 50 seconds, averaging 53.09 knots over 3,106 nautical miles (Yacht Club Costa Smeralda). Fincantieri described the record as unbeaten in 2017 (Fincantieri).
How fast is Destriero?
She averaged 53.09 knots across the Atlantic in 1992 (Yacht Club Costa Smeralda). Her top speed is listed as 66 knots by Fincantieri and Boat International and 67 knots by SuperYacht Times; SuperYacht Times reported peaks of 70 knots during the crossing (Fincantieri, Boat International, SuperYacht Times).
What engines does Destriero have?
Three General Electric LM1600 gas turbines, about 60,000 hp in total, driving three KaMeWa waterjets (YachtBuyer, Fincantieri). In 2024 Yachting News reported that the turbines had been removed while she was laid up in Bremen (Yachting News).
Who built and designed Destriero?
Fincantieri built her at Muggiano and Riva Trigoso in less than a year, delivering her in 1991 (Fincantieri). Donald L. Blount did the naval architecture and Pininfarina the exterior styling (Boat International, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda).
Did Destriero win the Blue Riband?
Fincantieri and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda say she won the Blue Riband, which the Italian liner Rex had won in 1933 (Fincantieri, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda). YachtBuyer notes that the Hales Trophy was not awarded to her because it was reserved for commercial passenger ships, not private yachts (YachtBuyer). She did receive Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic Trophy and the New York Yacht Club's Columbus Atlantic Trophy for the double crossing (SuperYacht Times).
Where is Destriero now?
After a refit in 2000 she was laid up in Plymouth and in 2009 moved to the Lürssen yard at Lemwerder, near Bremen (YachtBuyer). In May 2024 Barche a Motore and Yachting News reported that her owners had decided to break her up there (Barche a Motore, Yachting News); completion of the demolition has not been confirmed.
